Physical Education at SJI

At St. James' Infant and Nursery School, PE is an integral part of our curriculum. Not only do we ensure that we meet all of the National Curriculum criteria as below, we also endeavour to give our pupils additional opportunities so that they are able to the new guidelines of one hour's physical activity per day (of which 30 minutes per day in school).

Alongside PE lessons which are taught by specialist coaches, following the National Curriculum, all of our Year 2 children attend swimming lessons. Lunchtime and after-school physical activities are planned and children who access breakfast club enjoy a range of physical activities before school.

The PE National Curriculum for KS1:

Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending

perform dances using simple movement patterns.
